What Is Same-Day Electricity?

As the name suggests, same-day electricity provides your home with power the day you sign up for your plan. The connection isn’t always instant — although it can happen — but you’ll generally have electricity within a few hours.

How to Get Same-Day Service for Electricity

Now let’s take a closer look at how to get same-day service in Texas:

Prepaid Electricity Options

Same-day prepaid electricity — also known as pay-as-you-go electricity — is a plan that lets you add funds to an account. Rather than receiving a monthly statement and paying for the power you already used, the money in your account goes toward what you’ll use in the future.

These prepaid plans come with no long-term contracts, and you won’t receive a bill. That can help you avoid the fees that many traditional plans tack on at the end of the month. They’re also great for people who want — or need — more flexibility when it comes to paying for electricity. Your power company will let you know when you dip below a set balance threshold, enabling you to replenish the account before it’s empty.

In addition to same-day prepaid plans, you also have fixed-rate, and variable-rate options. Fixed-rate plans do require a contract. However, your energy rate won’t change even if Texas electricity prices fluctuate. Unlike pay-as-you-go plans, you’ll receive monthly bills and pay for the power you used at the end of the month.

A variable-rate plan also provides you with a bill and requires regular monthly payments. It doesn’t have a term requirement, though, and your rates can change month to month depending on the current market prices.

Research and Compare Electricity Rates

It’s time to start researching power providers and their rates. There are a couple of ways you can go about this.

Your first option is to conduct a manual search. The process involves determining which Texas electricity providers offer same-day plans — and which ones they provide. Take note of each company’s rates, contract terms, and fees.

A manual search can be a bit of a tedious process. Power Wizard makes it faster and easier. All you need to do is provide your zip code and some basic information about your home. Within seconds, you’ll have a list of plan options to compare.

Determine Which Electricity Companies Have the Best Rates

The rates charged by each Texas electricity provider are an important factor to consider. But there’s more to choosing a plan than looking for the lowest cost per kilowatt-hour (kWh). You’ll want to consider factors such as your home’s size and age and your typical electricity usage. That information will allow you to see which plans are best for you.

Power Wizard can take care of this part of the process, too. The platform’s algorithm doesn’t just show you the plan options in your area. It uses the information you provide about your home to determine which of them meet all of your needs. If you choose to become a VIP member, Power Wizard will continue to monitor rates and notify you if better options are available.

Sign Up Online for Same-Day Power Connection

Once you decide on a plan, it’s time to sign up. You can typically complete this process online, although some providers may allow you to sign up over the phone. You won’t need to provide much information, but most companies will require a working debit or credit card. After you sign up, all that’s left to do is wait for your power company to connect your electricity.

With Power Wizard’s VIP access plan, you won’t have to worry about this part either. Power Wizard won’t just find you the best plans, they’ll take care of selecting the best option and signing you up. If you don’t like the plan, you can notify customer support, and they’ll switch you to a different one.

Barriers to Finding an Electricity Supplier Same-Day in Texas

Same-day electricity typically means that you’ll have your power connected the day you sign up. However, there are a few hurdles that could result in delays.

Here are a few of the most common barriers you should be aware of:

  • Switch Hold with another Texas electricity provider. If you are on an switch-hold with another provider, your new provider won’t be able to switch your electricity. You’ll need to resolve the switch-hold with the provider first.
  • Many power providers charge early termination fees (ETFs) for canceling your contract before it ends. If you want to move to a same-day electricity plan, you’ll need to determine if you want to wait or if the cost of the ETF is worth what you’ll save with your new plan.
  • Cut-off times. Some Texas power providers and Transmission and Delivery Utilities (TDUs) may have a cut-off time each day. If you sign up after this set time, you won’t get power until the next day.
  • The day you sign up. In Texas, your new power provider won’t be able to connect your power if you sign up on a Sunday or holiday. This is limited by the TDU of your service location.
  • No smart meter. You’ll need a smart meter for your power company to connect your electricity remotely. If you don’t have one, a technician will need to come to your home to either install it or connect your service manually.

Does Same-Day Electricity Apply to Apartments?

Same-day electricity isn’t only for homeowners. If you rent an apartment, you can take advantage of the same-day electricity, too. Alternatively, Power Wizard can provide you with a list of the best plans for your new apartment and get you connected the day you move in.
