How the Electricity Cost Calculator Works

Our electricity bill calculator makes it easy to see what a plan could actually cost you each month. No guesswork, no math—just a quick, clear estimate based on your home and usage.

  1. Enter Your ZIP Code: Start by entering your ZIP code. If we have rates from the local electricity market, we will automatically display them, otherwise we will display the national average electricity rate.
  2. Review and Edit the Rate: Adjust the suggested rate to match your current electricity rate or to compare your options.
  3. Add Your Home Size: Enter your home’s square footage. We’ll use it to estimate your average electricity usage.
  4. Calculate Your Estimate: Click Calculate Estimate to see your projected monthly and annual electricity costs.

Pro Tip

Delivery charges (listed as TDU or TDSP fees) from your utility company are included in your monthly electricity bill, so we factor them into your estimate.

Key Takeaways – Why Use an Electricity Cost Calculator?

  • Quickly estimate your annual and monthly electricity bill based on your home size, ZIP code, and rate.
  • Your electricity bill is influenced by several factors, including the size of your home, the appliances you use, your lifestyle and habits, the climate you live in, the type of electricity plan you have, and the fees included in your plan.
  • The amount you’re billed for electricity each month is calculated by multiplying your usage (kWh) by your rate (¢/kWh) and adding any additional fees.

What Affects Your Electricity Bill?

Your monthly bill is shaped by a mix of factors unique to your home and habits, including:

  • Home Size and Appliances: Bigger homes and energy-hungry appliances like HVAC systems, water heaters, and large electronics naturally use more electricity.
  • Lifestyle and Habits: Working from home, charging an EV, or even the time of day you use power can make a noticeable difference in your bill.
  • The Climate You Live In: Electricity usage usually fluctuates with weather changes. This means you could see higher or lower bills based on the temperature of your area.
  • Plan Type: The electricity structure or plan you have affects how your costs add up over time.
  • Built-in Fees: Utility fees and provider add-ons can raise your bill even if your usage stays the same.

For example, consider the yearly kWh usage of common household appliances and devices to get an idea of how they may impact your electricity bill.

Appliance/Device Yearly kWh Use
3-ton Air Conditioner: ~9380 Use for 8 months 10hrs per day
Washing Machine 75-170 6 loads per week
Clothes Dryer 120-700 5 to 6 loads per week
Dishwasher 80-240 ~4 loads per week
Refrigerator 300-700 24/7 – 365
Microwave Oven 40-45 Used 5 minutes per day
Video Game Console 25-30 Used 2 hours per day
Coffee Maker 30-35 Used 5 minutes per day
Computer 146-800 8 hrs per day
Television (50 to 70 inches) 125-300
* These are estimates based on average wattage usage of each appliance. Actual kWh usage will vary based on the wattage and use time of your particular appliance.

Example Estimated Electricity Cost By Month

Your electricity bill total is based on the amount of electricity you use, the rate you pay per kWh, and any additional fees from your electricity provider, like base charges and fees. The basic formula looks like this:

Monthly Cost = Usage (kWh) × Rate (¢/kWh) + Fees

For example:

  • Average Monthly Usage: 1,200 kWh
  • Rate: 14¢ per kWh
  • Fees: $20

1,200 kWh × $0.14 = $168

$168 + $20 fees = $188 Estimated Monthly Bill

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The calculator provides an estimate meant for general informational purposes only. It’s based on the details you enter, along with average energy use for homes of a similar size and our current lowest-priced fixed-rate plan at 1,000 kWh. Your actual bill may differ depending on factors like your household’s energy habits, your home’s age, HVAC efficiency, and seasonal weather changes. The estimate includes TDU (Transmission and Distribution Utility) fees but doesn’t include taxes or one-time charges. It’s also limited to fixed-rate plans and doesn’t apply to usage-credit or time-of-use plans.

Yes. You don’t need to know your exact kWh usage to get an estimate. Just enter your ZIP code, and the calculator will display an average rate for your area. Then, add your home’s square footage, and we’ll estimate your typical energy usage based on similar homes.

If you live in a deregulated area of Texas, the rate shown in the calculator already includes utility delivery charges. If you’re outside a deregulated area, the calculator uses the average U.S. electricity rate, which does not include delivery charges. You can also enter your own rate for a more customized estimate.

You can lower your electricity usage by making simple changes like switching to LED bulbs, unplugging electronics when not in use, and only running full loads of laundry or dishes. Adjusting your thermostat a few degrees and sealing air leaks can also make a big difference in keeping your energy use (and bills) down.
