What Was Griddy Energy?

Griddy Energy was a Texas-based retail electric provider (REP) founded in 2017.

Before leaving the Texas electricity market, the company offered residential and commercial customers access to wholesale electricity pricing throughout deregulated areas of the state.

Unlike most retail electric providers, which sold traditional fixed-rate or variable-rate plans, Griddy centered its business around direct access to wholesale electricity prices combined with a monthly membership fee.

What Makes Griddy Energy Different From Other REPs?

Griddy Energy built its business around a wholesale pricing model that differed from the approach used by most Texas electricity providers.

Instead of packaging electricity into plans with built-in retail markups, the company provided customers access to wholesale electricity pricing and emphasized transparency in how electricity costs were calculated.

The company also highlighted several features designed to appeal to cost-conscious consumers, including:

  • No contract markups
  • No early termination fees (ETFs)
  • Pay-as-you-go billing
  • Transparent pricing
  • Online account management tools

Griddy’s goal was to provide customers with a more direct connection to the wholesale electricity market and greater visibility into their energy costs.

Griddy Energy Plans

Griddy took a different approach than most Texas electricity providers by focusing on a single wholesale pricing model instead of offering multiple plan options.

Wholesale Pricing Plan

Customers who joined Griddy received:

  • Access to wholesale electricity pricing
  • A membership-based billing structure
  • No long-term contract requirements

Pay-as-you-go Account Funding

The company believed customers should pay electricity prices that more closely reflected real-time market costs rather than retail rates that included provider markups.

Because pricing was tied directly to wholesale market conditions, electricity costs could rise sharply during periods of high demand or supply constraints.

Business Plans

Griddy also extended its wholesale pricing model to commercial customers.

Business membership fees were based on annual electricity usage, with custom pricing available for organizations consuming more than 60,000 kWh per year.

Griddy Energy Customer Service

While Griddy was operating, customers could contact the company through several support channels, including:

  • Phone support
  • Email support
  • Text messaging support
  • Online contact forms

Customers commonly reached out regarding:

  • Billing questions
  • Account management
  • Service-related inquiries

Customer support was generally available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Central Time.

Griddy Energy Pay Bill

Griddy used a pay-as-you-go billing system rather than traditional monthly invoicing.

Customers maintained a prepaid account balance and stored a payment method on file to cover future electricity usage. When the account balance fell below a predetermined threshold, funds were automatically added based on the customer’s selected replenishment amount.

The company promoted this approach as a way for customers to maintain greater control over their electricity usage and budget
