True Power Rates in Texas: What You Can Expect to Pay

True Power offers fixed-rate plans, meaning the energy charge stays the same during the contract term, but your total bill can still vary based on usage and changes in TDU delivery charges and taxes. Market prices for new plans can also change over time. Electricity rates can be influenced by location, season, demand, and other market conditions, and fluctuate throughout the year. Enrolling in one of their long-term plans during spring or fall, when demand is lower, could help you secure a lower rate for the year. Before you commit, read each plan’s Electricity Facts Label (EFL) for full details.

Who Is True Power? Company Background & Texas Market Role

True Power is a Houston-based REP focused on keeping energy shopping simple and straightforward for Texas residents. They offer both traditional fixed-rate plans and green-energy fixed-rate plans and at times variable-price plans. This gives customers the option to lock in a predictable rate, support renewable energy, or have more flexibility. Enrollment is designed to be quick and hassle-free, so you can get your lights on without jumping through hoops.

Once you’re signed up, True Power’s user-friendly online account portal makes it easy to track your electricity usage, manage payments, view billing history, and handle basic account maintenance all in one place. If you need assistance, their knowledgeable customer support team is ready to help.

How True Power Works as a Retail Electric Provider (REP)

In Texas’s deregulated electricity market, your power service is split between two key players: your REP and your Transmission & Distribution Utility (TDU). Your REP, like True Power, is the company you choose. They sell you the electricity, set your energy rate, handle your billing, and manage customer service.
The TDU, on the other hand, is the local utility company that owns and maintains the poles, wires, and infrastructure that physically deliver electricity to your home. You can’t choose your TDU; it’s assigned by location.

Both companies work together within the Electricity Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid, which manages the flow of electricity for most of Texas.

Role Organization Responsibility Customer Action
Retail Electric Provider (REP) True Power Creates electricity plans, sets contract terms, manages billing, and provides customer service Compare plans, read the EFL, enroll, manage or switch your plan
Transmission & Distribution Utility (TDU) Oncor, CenterPoint Energy, AEP Texas North, AEP Texas Central, TNMP Delivers electricity, maintains power lines, reads meters, and restores outages Contact for power outages, downed lines, and restoration updates
Grid Operator ERCOT Manages grid reliability and balances electricity supply and demand for most of Texas Not a billing contact; use REP or TDU for service issues

True Power Energy Plans: Fixed-Rate & Green Options

True Power offers two main types of electricity plans: fixed-rate and green energy. They are available in 3-, 12-, 18-, 24-, and 36-month contracts. While they do not currently offer variable-price plans, they advertise them and may add them in the future.

True Power Fixed-Rate Plans

Fixed-rate electricity plans have a stable energy charge throughout your contract term. These plans are a great option for most Texans because they offer more predictability.

Pros:

  • Easier budgeting
  • Protection from market fluctuations
  • Simple plan structure

Cons:

  • Early Termination Fee (ETF) may apply if you cancel early
  • Limited flexibility
  • No benefit if market prices drop

True Power Green Energy Plans (100% Renewable Options)

True Power’s green energy options keep a fixed energy charge powered by 100% renewable sources (matched with Renewable Energy Certificates). They can be a good fit for Texans who want the simplicity of a fixed rate and environmentally conscious electricity.

Pros:

  • Fixed-rate
  • Multiple contract lengths
  • No solar panels required

Cons:

  • ETFs may apply
  • Slightly more expensive than traditional fixed-rate plans
  • Availability may vary by location

True Power Variable-Rate Plans

Variable-rate (or price) plans have an energy charge that can change each month based on market conditions. Because of their unpredictability, they are typically best for short-term power needs.

Pros:

  • Some don’t have long-term contracts or ETFs
  • Potentially lower prices when market demand decreases

Cons:

  • Difficult to budget
  • Unexpected price fluctuations
  • Often more expensive long-term than fixed-rate plans
