Power Wizard’s energy experts selected these three plans based on pricing, contract terms, and customer experience. Rates may update daily.
Rates in The Woodlands currently range from 7.2¢ to ---¢ per kWh. Understanding your actual electricity usage is one of the most important aspects when shopping for an electricity plan.
Before you sign: some plans advertise a low per-kWh number but hide a bill credit that only activates when your usage reaches or exceeds a specific threshold. Stay below that threshold, and the effective rate is higher. Always open the Electricity Facts Label (EFL) before enrolling.

A studio apartment near Hughes Landing (500 kWh) has a very different cost than a 3,500-square-foot home in Sterling Ridge (2,000 kWh) in August.
Typically, The Woodlands homes run larger than the Texas average. If your monthly usage routinely hits 2,000 kWh or more, which is common with pools, home offices, or irrigation, the per-kWh rate matters more than it would for a smaller household. Small differences compound fast at higher usage.
For CenterPoint-served addresses in The Woodlands, more than a dozen providers compete for your business through Power Wizard. Ratings and plan availability vary. Enter your ZIP code to see exactly what’s live for your address.

Not every plan is right for every household. A smaller home near Creekside Park and a 4,000-square-foot house in Alden Bridge don’t shop the same way. Here’s what’s available and when each type makes sense.
| Plan Type | Best For | Price Stability | Contract |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed rate | Long-term residents | High | 3–36 months |
| Variable-Price | Short-term needs, flexibility | Low | Typically month-to-month |
| Time-of-Use | Night/weekend users | Medium | 6-36 months |
| Prepaid/No-Deposit | No credit check needed | Varies | May or may not have a long-term contract |
| Renewable Energy | Eco-conscious households | Medium–High | 6-36 months |
| Bill/Usage Credit | Households with consistently medium to high electricity usage | Medium | 6-36 months |
| Solar Buyback | Solar panel owners | Medium | 6-36 months |
Fixed rate plans lock in your per-kWh rate for the contract term. Your usage goes up and down with the seasons. Your rate doesn’t. Most Woodlands households default to fixed plans for this reason, especially with larger homes where monthly bills can swing significantly.

| APG&E - SimpleSaver 24 | 7.6¢ | $76.00 | 24 mos. |
| Rhythm Energy - PowerShift Payback 12 | 13.0¢ | $130.30 | 12 mos. |
| Energy Texas - Come & Take It 12 | 13.2¢ | $132.40 | 12 mos. |
| BKV Energy - Lantana 12 | 13.7¢ | $137.00 | 12 mos. |
Some time-of-use (TOU) plans may offer no-cost usage during off-peak hours, often overnight, but compensate with a higher daytime or peak-hours rate. If you charge an EV overnight or run appliances during the plan’s off-peak window, the math can work in your favor. If your usage peaks during business hours, you’ll likely pay more than you would with a standard fixed-rate plan.

No-deposit plans do not require a credit check when you sign up. Prepaid plans function like a pay-as-you-go account. You put money in upfront and use it as you consume electricity. One important aspect is that there is no upfront deposit needed for prepaid plans, but you must keep a balance to maintain active service. “No deposit” does not mean “no upfront costs.” You are still funding the account.

Renewable energy plans allow The Woodlands residents to support cleaner energy without changing their electricity use. These plans help reduce emissions by supporting investments in renewable energy projects, such as wind and solar, instead of fossil fuels.
Gexa Energy, Chariot Energy, and Rhythm Energy all offer renewable options at competitive rates. Gexa offers renewable energy plans, though not all Gexa plans are renewable. Check the EFL for each plan’s renewable content percentage before enrolling.

| Energy Texas - Bigger Than Texas 24 | 13.8¢ | $138.40 | 24 mos. |

Bill credit plans list a low per-kWh rate but include a monthly credit that only applies when you hit a specific usage threshold. That credit activates when your usage reaches or exceeds that level, not within a range. If you use less, you don’t get the credit, and the effective rate is higher than advertised.
For larger Woodlands homes that consistently hit 1,000 or 2,000 kWh per month, these can be a good deal. For smaller households, the threshold risk usually isn’t worth it. Always check the EFL.

If you have solar panels, solar buyback plans pay you for excess electricity you send back to the grid. Buyback rates and terms vary significantly by provider. Chariot Energy and Rhythm Energy both offer options worth comparing side by side.

Switching providers takes about five minutes and doesn’t touch your service. CenterPoint Energy handles the physical delivery regardless of which provider you’re on. The electricity comes from the same lines, and the only thing that changes is who sends your bill.
Here’s how it works:
On early termination fees (ETFs): You can shop around and switch providers at the end of your contract. ETFs may apply if you leave early.
What else to know:
September through November. Demand drops after summer, wholesale prices ease, and providers are competing hard for new customers. That combination tends to produce the best fixed rates in the CenterPoint market.
Two separate companies may be involved in getting electricity to your home, depending on whether your address is in a deregulated service area.
If the power goes out, contact your utility directly. CenterPoint customers should call CenterPoint at 1-713-207-2222. Entergy Texas customers should report outages directly to Entergy Texas. Your retail electric provider can’t restore power. That’s the utility’s job.
For CenterPoint-served addresses, every provider pays the same CenterPoint delivery charges. These charges are regulated by the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) and are identical across all providers in the CenterPoint service area. Current Transmission and Distribution Utility (TDU) charges:
Power Wizard’s rate comparisons already include TDU fees. The prices you see are all-in.
New to The Woodlands? Your first step is to check whether your new address is served by CenterPoint Energy or Entergy Texas. If it’s in CenterPoint’s deregulated service area, you can choose a retail electric provider (REP). If it’s served by Entergy Texas, retail electricity choice is not available for that address.
You can schedule electricity service to start on your move-in date, and many Texas retail electric providers (REPs) allow you to choose a future start date. If you need same-day service, enrollment must be completed before your provider’s cutoff time, which varies by provider, plan, service area, and service day. Same-day activation usually requires a smart meter; otherwise, service may begin the next business day.
Moving does not trigger an early termination fee (ETF) on your current electricity contract, no matter where you move. Keep your final bill current, because any unpaid balance may be sent to collections after the account closes.
Some parts of The Woodlands are deregulated, but not every address has retail electricity choice. If your address is served by CenterPoint Energy, you can choose a retail electric provider (REP). If your address is served by Entergy Texas, you are in a regulated electricity market. Entergy Texas is both your utility and electricity provider, so you cannot choose a separate REP for that address.
The Woodlands is commonly associated with ZIP codes 77380, 77382, 77385, 77389, and, in some areas, 77354 and 77375. Power Wizard shows live rates for deregulated addresses. Availability depends on the service address.
The utility company depends on your address. Many deregulated addresses are served by CenterPoint Energy, while other areas are served by Entergy Texas in a regulated market.
Yes, with one exception. All standard plans from retail electric providers require a credit check. If you want to skip the credit check, prepaid plans don’t require one, though you’ll need to maintain a funded account balance to keep service active.
Usually, yes. Many Texas retail electric providers (REPs) offer same-day electricity in deregulated areas like The Woodlands if you enroll before the provider’s cutoff time and your home has a smart meter. Cutoff times vary by provider, plan, service area, and service day. If you miss the cutoff time or do not have a smart meter, your service will typically begin the next business day.
Spring and fall. Demand is usually lower, wholesale prices often ease, and providers may compete harder for new customers. You can lock in a new rate up to 90 days before your current contract ends, so you can shop in the fall even if your contract doesn’t expire until January. Learn more in our guide to the best time to shop for electricity in Texas.
For CenterPoint-served deregulated addresses, nothing happens to your power during a provider switch. CenterPoint continues delivering electricity, and the switch happens administratively with no service interruption.
If your address is served by CenterPoint Energy, call 1-713-207-2222. If your address is served by Entergy Texas, report the outage directly to Entergy Texas.
Moving to a new address does not trigger an early termination fee (ETF) on your current contract. ETFs only apply if you cancel service at the same address before the contract term ends. You can also switch penalty-free during the last 14 days of any fixed-rate contract.
The Electricity Facts Label (EFL) is a standardized disclosure document that every retail electric provider must provide. It shows the actual per-kWh rate at different usage levels (500, 1,000, and 2,000 kWh), all fees, the contract term, and the plan’s renewable energy percentage. Reading the EFL, especially for plans with bill credits, is the most reliable way to understand what you’ll actually pay.
