Understanding TNMP’s Role in Texas Electricity

Texas-New Mexico Power (TNMP) is a regulated transmission and distribution utility (TDU) that delivers power to more than 280,000 homes and businesses across Texas. Headquartered in Lewisville, Texas, TNMP employs more than 400 employees working in over 20 Texas communities and operates within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) power grid. Despite its name, TNMP now serves customers exclusively in Texas.

Unlike Retail Electricity Providers (REPs), TNMP does not sell electricity plans. Instead, it manages the delivery side of electric service, including:

  • Electricity Transmission and Distribution: Operates and maintains the network of transmission lines, distribution lines, substations, transformers, and other equipment that move electricity across its service territory and deliver power directly to customers.
  • Power Line and Equipment Maintenance: Performs routine inspections, preventative maintenance, equipment upgrades, and vegetation management to help ensure system reliability, improve safety, and reduce the likelihood of service interruptions.
  • Outage Response and Restoration: Monitors the power grid, responds to outages and emergency situations, dispatches repair crews, and works to restore service as quickly and safely as possible during routine disruptions and severe weather events.
  • Meter Installation and Management: Installs, maintains, tests, and upgrades electric meters used to measure energy consumption, helping ensure accurate billing and supporting advanced metering technologies that provide more detailed usage information.

TNMP has also invested in system reliability and grid resilience. In 2024, the company proposed approximately $545 million in resilience investments aimed at strengthening the transmission and distribution system, improving outage response, enhancing grid security, and reducing the impacts of severe weather.

TNMP Service Areas

TNMP’s service area includes a mix of rural communities, growing suburban areas, and Gulf Coast cities throughout the state. Its network spans multiple service regions, allowing it to provide electric delivery service to communities with diverse geographic and weather conditions.

Starting New Service in a TNMP Area

If you’re moving to a home or business located within TNMP’s service territory, you’ll need to choose a Retail Electricity Provider (REP) to begin service. After you enroll in an electricity plan, your provider coordinates with TNMP to establish service and activate the meter if necessary.

Since TNMP is responsible for delivering electricity rather than selling it, customers do not contact TNMP to shop for plans or enroll in service. However, TNMP may perform any required meter work or service connection activities associated with the enrollment process.

Before moving, you should verify whether TNMP serves your new address, as utility service territories vary throughout Texas.

Electricity Providers Available in TNMP Service Areas

While TNMP delivers electricity, customers in deregulated areas can choose from a variety of REPs. Every provider pays the same TNMP delivery charges, so differences in plan pricing come primarily from the REPs energy charge.
