What is Spark Energy?
The quick answer to “What is Spark Energy?” is simple: Spark Energy is an electricity and natural gas provider.
Spark Energy was founded in 1999 in Houston, Texas, and provides electricity plans in many different cities throughout the state.
The reason you have the ability to choose your electricity provider and plan is because of something called deregulation.
Electricity deregulation in Texas was approved in January of 2002.
As a result, 85% of Texas power consumers can choose their electricity service from a variety of Retail Electric Providers (REPs). Energy deregulation restructured the energy market. Its purpose was to prevent large energy companies from taking over by making them compete for your business, but it also:
- Gave the power to the consumer
- Reduced generation costs and customer prices
- Allows you to choose from multiple energy providers based on what rate best fits your needs
This is great for you as a consumer because it gives you the ultimate choice.
What makes Spark Energy different than all the other REPs?
There are a few things that set Spark Energy apart from all the other REPs.
They provide:
- Savings expertise
- Community support
- And customer service
But they also have 3 more things that differentiate them from other electricity providers.
First, Spark Energy sells more than just electricity.
They are also a natural gas provider. A number of other Texas REPs only supply electricity.
Second, Spark Energy operates in 19 states spanning from California to New York.
You can find Spark Energy users in Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, and Florida, to name a few.
Third, Spark Energy is philanthropic.
The company supports the following organizations:
- Child Advocates
- Helping a Hero
- Lemonade Day
- Boys & Girls Clubs of America
Power Wizard finds you the best electricity plan and ensures you won’t overpay for electricity again.

How To Find The Best Electricity Plan In Texas
The simple answer is, it depends on you and your family.
There are many variables that will factor into how you decide what rate, plan, and REP you choose to use.
Since it is a highly individualized answer, you will need to examine your own situation to determine what the “best” electricity plan means for you.
With all the hidden fees, technical jargon included in the contracts, and all the other stipulations, it’s hard to know if it’s truly right for your unique electricity needs.
Power Wizard finds you the best electricity plan and ensures you won’t overpay for electricity again.
Learn More in Under 2 MinsEven if you think it’s best for you, how can you be 100% sure?
Consider the following:
- What is the size and age of your home?
- Do you have a ranch-style home?
- Is your home a newer build?
- How many stories does your home have?
- When was your home built?
- What type of lifestyle do you and your family live?
- What area of Texas do you live in?
All of these factors and more will narrow down and even eliminate certain REPs and plans for you.
Keep in mind that the best electricity plan for you may be with Spark Energy. Or, it may not be.
Spark Energy Rates
Spark Energy offers a range of rates and plans available to consumers.
Why so many? Simply put, because electricity is not “one-size-fits-all.”
Not only that, but those rates are constantly changing because of the wholesale prices of electricity in Texas. The rates that you see today will likely not be the same as the rates that you will see even a few weeks from now.
As you’re searching, keep in mind that electricity rates often change because there are many factors that affect the electricity market.
To name a few:
- The price of natural gas
- Weather
- Power plant outages
You could go straight to Spark Energy’s website and check their rates there.
But, you run a high risk of overpaying for your electricity every month and could even miss out on the plan that best fits you.
Spark Energy’s website doesn’t factor in key information that will help you get the best plan and rate for your lifestyle, like:
- Your home’s size
- Your home’s age
- Your lifestyle
- Your home’s location
Another common trap to avoid? Don’t just look (or sign up for) the plan with the lowest price per kWh (kilowatt-hour).
Just because it’s the cheapest plan, or offers the best promotion, does not mean it is the best plan for you.
So, what is the easiest way to determine what electricity plan is best suited for you?
Power Wizard’s Shopping Tool will allow you to find that answer in under five minutes.
All you have to do is enter:
- Your zip-code
- The size of your home
- A few other relevant pieces of information
Power Wizard finds you the best electricity plan and ensures you won’t overpay for electricity again.

Spark Energy Plans
Spark Energy electricity and natural gas plans offer:
- Fixed-rate plans
- 100% green, renewable electricity
- Carbon-neutral natural gas
- 6-month, 12-month, 18-month, and longer contracts
Something worth noting is that in order to establish service with Spark Energy, you will be asked to provide your social security number.
If you read that and felt your heart drop, don’t worry.
There is one other way.
If you don’t have a social security number or prefer not to give yours out, you can still establish service, but be aware that you’ll now need to put down a deposit.
Month-to-month
These plans have an electricity rate that will vary from month-to-month.
Month-to-month plans generally require a credit check, so keep in mind this may not be the best option for you if your credit isn’t great.
Fixed-Rate**A fixed-rate plan means your rate won’t change based on how hot or cold the month is and how much energy you use to keep cool or warm.
It’s a promise made by an electricity company to not change the price you pay per kilowatt-hour for your contract term.
Spark Instant-Plus Plan
This electricity plan works much as a fixed-rate plan would. It gives you control over the amount you pay for electricity every month instead of having a bill that fluctuates.
Spark Energy says that as long as your monthly electricity usage does not exceed 2,000 kWh a month, your monthly electric bill will always be the same.
Just don’t forget about taxes.
Instant Boost 12 Plan
This plan may also be a great fit for you if you appreciate predictability.
Power Wizard finds you the best electricity plan and ensures you won’t overpay for electricity again.
Learn More in Under 2 MinsAs long as your monthly usage doesn’t go over 3,000 kWh you’ll pay a flat base price each month.
“Pros”:
- No surprises
- It is a benefit if you are on a fixed budget
- There are no “minimum usage” fees
“Cons”:
- The plan term is 12 months (no more, no less)
- You must stay under 3,000 kWh
- If you exceed the monthly usage threshold, you will pay the price per kWh above the threshold, including the monthly base fee.
So, if you’re in-between places, looking to move in less than 12 months, or are moving into a new place and can’t guarantee your usage just yet, this plan probably won’t be ideal for your situation.
